Tanghulu, also called tang hulu or bingtang hulu, is a traditional Chinese snack made of Chinese hawthorn fruit skewered on bamboo sticks and coated in a hardened malt sugar syrup. The fruit is skewered and dipped in heated sugar syrup that hardens as it cools, and the snack takes its name from its calabash like shape. It has been made since the Song dynasty and remains especially popular in northern Chinese cities such as Beijing and Tianjin, with modern versions sometimes using other fruits such as strawberries or mandarin oranges in place of hawthorn.
