Bap is the Korean word for cooked rice or grain, made by boiling rice or other grains such as black rice, barley, sorghum, millet or beans until the water has cooked away. Vegetables, seafood or meat can be added to create different varieties, and historically most Koreans ate bap as a mixture of grains and beans rather than plain white rice. Grain based bap has been a staple of Korean cuisine since ancient times and carries honorific alternate names, jinji for elders and sura for the monarch.
