Hotdish

Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes

Hotdish is a casserole containing a starch such as potatoes or pasta, a meat such as ground beef, a canned or frozen vegetable, and canned soup, typically cream of mushroom, as a binder, baked and served hot from a single dish. It originated in the Upper Midwest of the United States, especially Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and Montana, emerging during the Great Depression when farm households needed an economical way to feed families and church congregations. It remains a staple of potlucks, family reunions and church suppers across the region.
