High in protein, it is a key ingredient in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines, used for hummus and, when soaked, coarsely ground with herbs and spices and fried into patties, for falafel; it is also central to Indian cuisine, used in salads, soups, stews and curries. In 2023, India accounted for 75 percent of global chickpea production.FactsChickpeaConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsEarliest Documented Use, From (Year)Well-attestedSourced to the subject's own account8000 BCE to 7500 BCE 1Origin RegionWell-attestedSourced to the subject's own accountSoutheastern Turkey and nearby Syria (the native range of its wild relative Cicer reticulatum) 1ChickpeaFilter Results15 entriesDish FamilyAllBread-Based Dishes (1)European Soups (1)European Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Fruit, Grain and Composed Bowl Salads (1)Latin American and Caribbean Breads and Pastries (1)Middle Eastern and North African Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)Middle Eastern and North African Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (2)South Asian Breads and Pastries (2)South Asian Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (2)South Asian Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (2)Sub-Saharan African Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)CuisineAllBengali Cuisine (1)Caribbean Cuisine (3)Egyptian Cuisine (1)Ethiopian Cuisine (1)Indian Cuisine (4)Lebanese Cuisine (1)Middle Eastern Cuisine (2)Pakistani Cuisine (3)Persian Cuisine (1)Spanish Cuisine (1)Sri Lankan Cuisine (1)Tunisian Cuisine (1)Era (Origin Period)All1300 (1)1800 (1)1936 (1)1940 (1)TraditionAllBread Baking (1)Lenten Fasting Foods (1)Mezze (2)Ramadan and Eid Feasting Traditions (3)Street Food Culture (5)Format/TypeAllBread-Based Dishes (1)European Soups (1)European Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Fruit, Grain and Composed Bowl Salads (1)Latin American and Caribbean Breads and Pastries (1)Middle Eastern and North African Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)Middle Eastern and North African Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (2)South Asian Breads and Pastries (2)South Asian Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (2)South Asian Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (2)Sub-Saharan African Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)CourseAllSnack or Street Food (5)Soup (1)Dietary SuitabilityAllVegetarian (1)Origin RegionAllAfrica (1)Algeria (1)Egypt (2)Eritrea (1)Ethiopia (1)India (4)Iran (1)Lebanon (1)Morocco (1)North Africa (1)Punjab (1)Spain (1)The Indian Subcontinent (1)Trinidad and Tobago (1)Tunisia (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 15AbgooshtChickpeaBalilaChickpeaBuddha bowlChickpeaChana MasalaChickpeaChole BhatureChickpeaCocido MadrilenoChickpeaDal puriChickpeaDoublesChickpeaFalafelChickpeaFattehChickpeaHariraChickpeaPani PuriChickpeaPanipuriChickpeaPapadamChickpeaShiroChickpeaConnectionsUsed ByAbgoosht, Dishes Well-attested Source Abgoosht (Wikipedia)tier 3Balila, Dishes Well-attested Source Balila (dish) (Wikipedia)Buddha bowl, Dishes Well-attested Source Buddha bowl (Wikipedia)Chana Masala, Dishes Well-attested Source Chana Masala (Wikipedia)tier 3Chole Bhature, Dishes Well-attested Source Chole bhature, WikipediaCocido Madrileno, Dishes Well-attested Source Cocido madrileno, WikipediaDal puri, Dishes Well-attested Source Dal puri (Wikipedia)Doubles, Dishes Well-attested Source Doubles, WikipediaFalafel, Dishes Well-attested Source Falafel (Wikipedia)tier 3Fatteh, Dishes Well-attested Source Fatteh - WikipediaHarira, Dishes Well-attested Source Harira (Wikipedia)tier 3Pani Puri, Dishes Well-attested Source Pani puri, WikipediaPanipuri, Dishes Well-attested Source Panipuri (Wikipedia)Papadam, Dishes Well-attested Source Papadam (Wikipedia)Pressure Cooking, Culinary Techniques Well-attested Shiro, Dishes Well-attested Source Shiro (Wikipedia)tier 3Syrian Cuisine, Cuisines Well-attested Source Syrian Cuisine (Wikipedia)In the Other AtlasesOriginated InSyriaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject originated.Source Chickpea (Wikipedia)tier 3TurkeyAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject originated.Source Chickpea (Wikipedia)tier 3Sources1.
