Its yellow fruit is used throughout the world primarily for its juice, which is about 5 to 6 percent citric acid and gives the fruit its characteristic sour taste, making it a key ingredient in drinks and foods such as lemonade and lemon meringue pie; the pulp and rind are also used in cooking and baking. In 2024 world production of lemons reached 23 million tonnes, led by India and Mexico, which together accounted for 31 percent of the total.FactsLemonConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsPartially AttestedOrigin RegionPartially AttestedNortheastern India (proposed) 1The source calls the origin uncertain and northeastern or northwestern India only proposed.Earliest Documented Use, From (Year)Well-attestedfrom 900 1Wikipedia "Lemon" Origins: the lemon was first recorded in literature in a 10th-century Arabic treatise on farming, used as an ornamental plant in early Islamic gardens.LemonFilter Results10 entriesDish FamilyAllCold Appetizers and Small Plates (1)Desserts and Sweet Puddings (1)European Dips and Spreads (1)European Grain and Starch Dishes (1)European Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)European Soups (1)Middle Eastern and North African Breads and Pastries (1)Middle Eastern and North African Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Sub-Saharan African Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (2)CuisineAllAmerican Cuisine (1)Greek Cuisine (2)Italian Cuisine (1)Middle Eastern Cuisine (1)Peruvian Cuisine (1)Senegalese Cuisine (2)Turkish Cuisine (2)West African Cuisine (1)Era (Origin Period)All1800 (1)1820 (1)TraditionAllMezze (2)Passover and Jewish Holiday Foods (1)Format/TypeAllCold Appetizers and Small Plates (1)Desserts and Sweet Puddings (1)European Dips and Spreads (1)European Grain and Starch Dishes (1)European Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)European Soups (1)Middle Eastern and North African Breads and Pastries (1)Middle Eastern and North African Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Sub-Saharan African Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (2)CourseAllCondiment or Dip (1)Dessert (2)Soup (1)Dietary SuitabilityAllContains Dairy or Egg (2)Contains Meat or Poultry (2)Vegetarian (1)Origin RegionAllGreece (3)Italy (1)Lebanon (1)Peru (1)Senegal (2)Turkey (1)United States (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 10AvgolemonoLemonBalilaLemonCausa LimenaLemonChicken YassaLemonLemon BarLemonPignolataLemonSpanakorizoLemonSütlü NuriyeLemonTirokafteriLemonYassaLemonConnectionsUsed ByAvgolemono, Dishes Well-attested Source Avgolemono (Wikipedia)tier 2Balila, Dishes Well-attested Source Balila (dish) (Wikipedia)Causa Limena, Dishes Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Causa limenaChicken Yassa, Dishes Well-attested Lemon Bar, Dishes Well-attested Source Lemon bar (Wikipedia)Lemonade, Drinks Well-attested Limoncello, Drinks Well-attested Pignolata, Dishes Well-attested Source Pignolata (Wikipedia)Punch, Drinks Well-attested Spanakorizo, Dishes Well-attested Source Spanakorizo (Wikipedia)Sütlü Nuriye, Dishes Well-attested Source Sütlü Nuriye (Wikipedia)Tirokafteri, Dishes Well-attested Source Tirokafteri (Wikipedia)Yassa, Dishes Well-attested Source Yassa (Wikipedia)tier 3Zesting, Culinary Techniques Well-attested In the Other AtlasesOriginated InIndiaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject originated.Source Lemon (Wikipedia)Sources1.
