The main bacteria used in its production are Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, with other lactobacilli and bifidobacteria sometimes added during or after culturing, and some countries regulate the minimum bacterial count or the specific strains that yogurt must contain.FactsYogurtConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsPartially AttestedEarliest Documented Use, From (Year)Partially Attested5000 BCE 1Source states the origins of yogurt are unknown; this region and year are described as the probable, not confirmed, first discovery.Origin RegionPartially AttestedCentral Asia and Mesopotamia 1Source states the origins of yogurt are unknown; this region and year are described as the probable, not confirmed, first discovery.ClassificationAllergenWell-attestedMilk 1YogurtFilter Results14 entriesDish FamilyAllAfghan and Central Asian Salads (1)Bread-Based Dishes (1)European Breads and Pastries (1)European Dips and Spreads (1)European Salads (1)European Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Middle Eastern and North African Rice and Grain Dishes (2)Middle Eastern and North African Soups (1)Middle Eastern and North African Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Middle Eastern Salads (1)South Asian Rice and Grain Dishes (1)South Asian Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)South Asian Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)CuisineAllAfghan Cuisine (2)British Cuisine (1)Bulgarian Cuisine (2)Egyptian Cuisine (1)Greek Cuisine (1)Indian Cuisine (3)Israeli Cuisine (1)Lebanese Cuisine (1)Persian Cuisine (1)Syrian Cuisine (1)Tajik Cuisine (1)Turkish Cuisine (3)Era (Origin Period)All1400 (1)1526 (1)TraditionAllChristmas Feast Traditions (1)Mezze (1)New Year Feast Traditions (2)Ramadan and Eid Feasting Traditions (2)Street Food Culture (1)Format/TypeAllAfghan and Central Asian Salads (1)Bread-Based Dishes (1)European Breads and Pastries (1)European Dips and Spreads (1)European Salads (1)European Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Middle Eastern and North African Rice and Grain Dishes (2)Middle Eastern and North African Soups (1)Middle Eastern and North African Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)Middle Eastern Salads (1)South Asian Rice and Grain Dishes (1)South Asian Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)South Asian Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes (1)CourseAllCondiment or Dip (1)Dessert (1)Soup (1)Dietary SuitabilityAllContains Dairy or Egg (6)Contains Meat or Poultry (3)Origin RegionAllBulgaria (2)Egypt (1)Greece (1)India (2)Iran (2)Pakistan (1)Syria (1)Tajikistan (1)Turkey (2)United Kingdom (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 14BanitsaYogurtBoraniYogurtChicken ChettinadYogurtChicken tikkaYogurtChicken Tikka MasalaYogurtÇılbırYogurtCurd riceYogurtFattehYogurtQurutobYogurtŞambaliYogurtSnow White saladYogurtTahchinYogurtTirokafteriYogurtYayla çorbasıYogurtConnectionsAssociated WithMilk, Ingredients Well-attested Carries AllergenMilk, Ingredients Well-attested Expresses TraditionFermentation, Food Traditions Well-attested Used ByAyran, Drinks Well-attested Banitsa, Dishes Well-attested Source Banitsa, WikipediaBorani, Dishes Well-attested Source Borani (Wikipedia)Bulgarian Cuisine, Cuisines Well-attested Source Bulgarian Cuisine (Wikipedia)Chicken Chettinad, Dishes Well-attested Source Chicken Chettinad (Wikipedia)Chicken tikka, Dishes Well-attested Source Chicken tikka (Wikipedia)Chicken Tikka Masala, Dishes Well-attested Source Chicken tikka masala - WikipediaÇılbır, Dishes Well-attested Source Cilbir (Wikipedia)Curd rice, Dishes Well-attested Source Curd rice (Wikipedia)Fatteh, Dishes Well-attested Source Fatteh - WikipediaLassi, Drinks Well-attested Source Lassi (Wikipedia)Qurutob, Dishes Well-attested Source Qurutob (Wikipedia)Şambali, Dishes Well-attested Source Şambali (Wikipedia)Snow White salad, Dishes Well-attested Source Snow White salad (Wikipedia)Tahchin, Dishes Well-attested Source Tahchin, WikipediaTirokafteri, Dishes Well-attested Source Tirokafteri (Wikipedia)Yayla çorbası, Dishes Well-attested Source Yayla çorbası (Wikipedia)In the Other AtlasesOriginated InAsiaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject originated.Source Yogurt - WikipediaCentral AsiaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject originated.Source Yogurt - WikipediaMesopotamiaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject originated.Source Yogurt - WikipediaSources1.
