Dal Bhat

Rice, Grain and Starch Dishes

Dal bhat, also called dhal bhaat or dal chawal, is a South Asian meal of dal, a thick lentil soup, served with bhat, cooked rice, and is one of the most common everyday meals across South Asia and parts of the Caribbean. The combination pairs the protein of lentils with the carbohydrates of rice to make a filling, nutritionally balanced staple, typically seasoned with chili pepper, cumin, garam masala, ghee, ginger, garlic, onion, turmeric and tomato, and in Nepal often with the aromatic Himalayan herb jimbu; the meal is also part of Bangladeshi and Indian regional cooking as well as Indo-Caribbean, Mauritian and Fijian cuisines descended from South Asian migration.
