The Bacon Explosion is a pork dish made by weaving strips of bacon into a lattice, layering it with Italian sausage, more crumbled bacon, barbecue sauce and barbecue rub, then rolling the whole thing into a large football-sized log and smoking or baking it, typically for about an hour per inch of thickness, before basting it again with barbecue sauce and slicing it into rounds. A full preparation contains at least 5,000 kilocalories and 18 ounces of fat. It was created by Kansas City barbecue competitors Jason Day and Aaron Chronister, who posted the recipe to their BBQ Addicts blog in December 2008 after being challenged on Twitter to invent the ultimate bacon dish, and it quickly became an internet phenomenon, drawing more than 500,000 hits and 16,000 links to the post.
