Bakwan

Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes

Bakwan are vegetable fritters, or gorengan, commonly found in Indonesia and usually sold by traveling street vendors. They are typically made of bean sprouts, shredded cabbage and carrots battered in a mixture of flour, corn starch and sago or tapioca for a crispy texture, then deep-fried in cooking oil; the dish is known as bala-bala in West Java and badak in Semarang, and is comparable to Japanese vegetable tempura, Korean pajeon, Bruneian cucur, Indian pakora, Burmese a-kyaw, Caribbean pholourie and Filipino ukoy.
