Cranachan is a traditional Scottish dessert originally made to celebrate the raspberry harvest in August, combining whipped cream, toasted oatmeal, honey, and fresh raspberries with whisky. It developed from crowdie, an older breakfast dish of crowdie cheese mixed with lightly toasted oatmeal, cream, and honey. Though now served throughout the year, especially on special occasions, cranachan is traditionally brought to the table as separate dishes of each ingredient so that diners can assemble their own portion.
