Efo riro is a vegetable soup and a native soup of the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria and other parts of Yorubaland, most commonly prepared with the vegetables Celosia argentea, known as shoko yokoto, and Amaranthus hybridus, known as efo tete. It was traditionally made with locally grown vegetables, meat, fish and a mixture of spices, though the choice of vegetables and proteins varies by personal preference and regional availability, with spinach, pumpkin leaves and sorrel leaves also commonly used alongside bell peppers, chili peppers and onions. It is a staple in Yorubaland, often served at home and during traditional ceremonies, typically eaten with iyan, fufu, eba, amala or other swallow foods, and its popularity has spread across Nigeria and beyond.
