Gudeg is a traditional Javanese dish from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, made from young unripe jackfruit stewed for several hours with palm sugar and coconut milk. Teak leaves and spices such as garlic, shallot, candlenut, coriander seed, galangal and bay leaves give it a distinctive reddish brown color. It is served hot or at room temperature, commonly with rice, chicken, egg and tempeh, and can be made vegetarian when prepared without meat.
