Macaroni casserole is a baked pasta dish that is a staple of home cooking across northern Europe, made from cooked macaroni bound with eggs and milk and often layered with meat, vegetables, or fish, then topped with cheese or breadcrumbs before baking. In Finland it is called makaronilaatikko and is commonly made with minced meat, ranking as one of the country's most popular everyday dinner dishes in a 2010 survey; in Sweden the dish is known as makaronipudding and typically combines ham, leek, and cheese. Malta's version, imqarrun, adds a bolognese style sauce and eggs, sometimes with chicken livers or bacon, finished with grated cheese or bechamel sauce, and the dish has also been adapted locally in North Macedonia and in Indonesia, where it is called makaroni schotel.
