Chocolate crinkles are cookies with a chewy, brownie-like center and a crisp, cracked exterior coated in powdered sugar. The recipe is credited to Helen Fredell of Saint Paul, Minnesota and was first published in a Betty Crocker cookbook in the early 1950s. As the cookies bake, the surface cracks apart and the powdered sugar settles into the fissures, giving the cookie its characteristic crinkled look. Although eaten around the world as a Christmas cookie, they are especially popular year round in the Philippines.
