This refinement happens both inside individual bees, through regurgitation and enzymatic activity, and during storage in the hive, through water evaporation that concentrates the honey's sugars until it becomes thick and viscous. Honey bees store the finished honey in the hive's beeswax honeycomb, a structure of hundreds or thousands of hexagonal cells into which the bees regurgitate it, while other honey-producing bee species store the substance in different structures, such as wax pots.FactsHoneyConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsEarliest Documented Use, From (Year)Well-attested6000 BCE 1Sourced to the subject's own accountThe source gives one floor estimate (at least 8,000 years ago), not a range, so the same year is recorded for both bounds.Origin RegionWell-attestedSourced to the subject's own accountCuevas de la Araña, Spain (earliest known depiction of honey gathering) 1HoneyFilter Results16 entriesDish FamilyAllConfections and Candies (1)Desserts and Sweet Puddings (1)East Asian Breads and Pastries (2)East Asian Rice and Grain Dishes (1)East Asian Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (2)European Breads and Pastries (2)European Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (2)Middle Eastern and North African Breads and Pastries (2)Middle Eastern and North African Rice and Grain Dishes (1)Middle Eastern and North African Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)North American Breads and Pastries (1)CuisineAllAmerican Cuisine (1)British Cuisine (1)Chinese Cuisine (3)Cuban Cuisine (1)Greek Cuisine (1)Indonesian Cuisine (1)Italian Cuisine (1)Japanese Cuisine (1)Korean Cuisine (1)Middle Eastern Cuisine (1)Moroccan Cuisine (1)Spanish Cuisine (1)Swiss Cuisine (1)Tunisian Cuisine (1)Turkish Cuisine (1)Era (Origin Period)All-160 (1)-57 (1)1200 (1)1400 (2)1800 (1)1954 (1)TraditionAllBread Baking (1)Christmas Feast Traditions (3)Easter Food Traditions (1)Lenten Fasting Foods (1)Passover and Jewish Holiday Foods (1)Ramadan and Eid Feasting Traditions (4)Street Food Culture (1)Wedding Feast Traditions (1)Format/TypeAllConfections and Candies (1)Desserts and Sweet Puddings (1)East Asian Breads and Pastries (2)East Asian Rice and Grain Dishes (1)East Asian Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (2)European Breads and Pastries (2)European Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (2)Middle Eastern and North African Breads and Pastries (2)Middle Eastern and North African Rice and Grain Dishes (1)Middle Eastern and North African Roasted, Grilled and Fried Dishes (1)North American Breads and Pastries (1)CourseAllDessert (8)Snack or Street Food (1)Dietary SuitabilityAllContains Dairy or Egg (2)Contains Meat or Poultry (1)Origin RegionAllAbbasid Caliphate (1)China (3)Egypt (1)Greece (2)Iraq (1)Italy (1)Japan (1)North Carolina (1)Ottoman Empire (1)Spain (1)Switzerland (1)Syria (1)The Korean Peninsula (1)The Maghreb (1)The Mediterranean (1)Turkey (1)United Kingdom (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 16AsidaHoneyBaklavaHoneyBasler LäckerliHoneyBienmesabeHoneyChar SiuHoneyCranachanHoneyHoney bunHoneyHoney ToastHoneyHotteokHoneyHwajeonHoneyLokmaHoneyOsmanthus cakeHoneyPlacenta CakeHoneyShebakiaHoneyStruffoliHoneyTurrónHoneyConnectionsUsed ByAsida, Dishes Well-attested Source Asida (Wikipedia)Baklava, Dishes Well-attested Source Baklava (Wikipedia)tier 3Basler Läckerli, Dishes Well-attested Source Basler Lackerli (Wikipedia)Bienmesabe, Dishes Well-attested Source Bienmesabe (Wikipedia)Char Siu, Dishes Well-attested Source Char Siu (Wikipedia)tier 3Cranachan, Dishes Well-attested Source Cranachan (Wikipedia)Honey bun, Dishes Well-attested Source Wikipedia, Honey bunHoney Toast, Dishes Well-attested Source Honey toast (Wikipedia)Hot Toddy, Drinks Well-attested Hotteok, Dishes Well-attested Source Hotteok (Wikipedia)Hwajeon, Dishes Well-attested Source Hwajeon (Wikipedia)Lokma, Dishes Well-attested Source Lokma (Wikipedia)Mead, Drinks Well-attested Osmanthus cake, Dishes Well-attested Source Osmanthus cake (Wikipedia)Placenta Cake, Dishes Well-attested Source Placenta Cake (Wikipedia)Shebakia, Dishes Well-attested Source Shebakia (Wikipedia)Struffoli, Dishes Well-attested Source Struffoli (Wikipedia)Turrón, Dishes Well-attested Source Turrón (Wikipedia)In the Other AtlasesOriginated InSpainAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject originated.Source Honey (Wikipedia)tier 3Sources1.
