American Cuisine

North American Cuisines

American cuisine is the cooking style and range of dishes prepared in the United States. It grew from a mixing of European cooking, Native American and Alaskan cooking, and African American cooking known as soul food. The Northeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, South, West and Southwest each show distinctive elements that reflect local food resources, local demographics and local innovation, and some states and cities, such as Minnesota and California, have styles of their own. Immigrant groups have also evolved distinct traditions, including Chinese American, Italian American and Mexican American cooking, while Cajun and Pennsylvania Dutch foodways remain regional heritages tied to particular ethnic groups.
